Questionning the question
How do we navigate social living systems continuously becoming?
This question has accompanied the Tamkeen for Our Humanity Foundation, implicitly then explicitly, since the inception of Tamkeen for Our Humanity Foundation. It became critical when the then Minister of Education in 2019 asked us “How do we generalise Tamkeen in the education system?” not as a technical challenge to be solved, but as a lived inquiry to be lived. Communities, organisations, education systems, territories and societies are living social ecosystems whose transformations emerge through relationships, meanings, histories, imaginations, tensions and countless visible and invisible conditions. Complexity therefore asks something different of us. Not better control, but a different quality of attention.
Over time, our practice has gradually given rise to a family of navigational instruments. None were designed in advance. Each emerged from the lived necessity of accompanying complex transformations while remaining faithful to their irreducible nature. Together they form what we now call Tamkeen Complexity Navigation.
We introduce five of these instruments:
- Watercolouring Landscapes of Manifestations of Emergence
- Topographies of Landscapes of Manifestations
- The Tamkeen Astrolabe
- The Metadata System
- Navigation Logbooks
These are not instruments and tools for reducing complexity into certainty. They are invitations to cultivate a different relationship with emergence itself.
Like an astrolabe that once helped navigators orient themselves beneath changing skies, these instruments do not determine the path. They help us remain in relationship with what is unfolding while learning to recognise the patterns that gradually reveal themselves and to feel the propensity of the currents, streams, eddies of the unfolding flow-field we navigate with our partners in Morocco and beyond.
The reflections confluencing throughout this blog are therefore not organised into themes or categories. They are organised into Landscapes of Manifestations of Emergence. This choice is intentional. A category classifies what already exists. A landscape allows us to witness what is still becoming. Each post belongs to a landscape because every reflection is itself a manifestation: a moment in which meaning, relationship, imagination or possibility becomes perceptible and intelligible. As landscapes gradually become watercoloured through many such manifestations, a living landscape slowly emerges, not of certainty, but of growing shared understanding with our partners.
